Lots is happening on the Bitcoin front with the incoming U.S. administration, but did you know that the Middle East is a huge hub for Bitcoin and Bitcoiners? Last week, our founder gave a talk on how Bitcoin is Halal (watch the recording on the below link), and Dr Ahmad Ammous, a Jordanian/Palestinian doctor, trained in the US (brother of Bitcoin Standard Author Saifedean Ammous) launched an online consultation service, which you can access from anywhere.

1. The Government of El Salvador makes Bitcoin use “voluntary”
The Scoop🕵️♂️: In order to meet the conditions for an IMF loan, the Government of El Salvador rescinded Bitcoin’s status as mandatory legal tender. It is now to be used on a “voluntary” basis. The screws were turned and Bukele caved in.
Why You Should Care🚨: The move is disheartening given the reasons for it. However, this may now be a true test of Bitcoin’s resilience as a currency. Arguably, whatever the people choose to use as “money” should be done on a voluntary basis, dictated by market forces, not by government mandate. Bitcoin now has a chance to prove that it is the store of value and medium of exchange that the people want.
What This Means for Bitcoin ✨: We will now get to see if adoption and use continues in El Salvador unabated, despite the change in policy.
2. A US Bitcoin Strategic Reserve (BSR)
The Scoop🕵️♂️: The incoming U.S. administration hit the ground running with a flurry of executive orders that are returning many U.S. govt policies to the pre-Obama era. There has been much discussion around building a Bitcoin Strategic Reserve, a policy actively pushed by Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis.
Why You Should Care🚨: The U.S. has a serious debt problem, and while the newly formed D.O.G.E. dept may be able to slash costs (like $50m on condoms for Gaza…) there is only so much they can do. Caitlin Long, founder of Custodia Bank just published a piece warning that a Bitcoin Strategic Reserve should not be turned into a bailout fund. You can read the full piece HERE. In it she states:
”But bailouts implicitly loom over the debate about a Bitcoin Strategic Reserve (“BSR”) in the U.S., because – if not expressly prohibited upfront – the BSR could someday be hijacked during a market panic to become a bailout fund for politically-connected parties.”
Meantime, notorious scammer and CEO of Ripple, Brad Garlinghouse has been aggressively lobbying the new administration to get his token (XRP) included in the Bitcoin Strategic Reserve. XRP is a worthless token, pre-mined (meaning they made a load and kept it for themselves) before being issued and marketed to an unsuspecting retail clientele by Ripple. XRP is at best a useless scam. At worst it is the backbone for the deployment of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) with all the associated social credit and surveillance systems that will place free people into a dystopian digital panopticon. See China for an example of what this would like in the wild.
What This Means for Bitcoin ✨: Bitcoin continues to be attacked relentlessly every day, especially by unethical players looking to make a quick buck. Dear America, please don’t fall for this scam.
